Curt Mowery, Partner
Cultivating is something Curt Mowery knows well; whether it's cultivating his business or the crops his family has been sowing for more than three generations. Located in the Sandy Point/Rosharon area of Brazoria County, Mowery Farms is a 2,500+ acre farm with Texas roots as deep as the crops they harvest. Founded by Curt's great grandfather in the 1940s, the original farm covered 200 acres of land, which was later expanded to 400 acres when Curt's father took over the business. But it wasn't until Curt and his brother Rodney became partners with their dad that the dreams for Mowery Farms became big. Really big. They had the business sense to make their dreams a reality. What they lacked was the capital and equipment necessary to turn their family run operation into a major producer.
Fortunately, Texas Gulf Bank saw their potential.
"Our relationship with Texas Gulf Bank began back in 1983 when they opened the Angleton branch. What made them so unique back then, and continues to differentiate them today, is they understand our business. In farming, there are many variables that can mean the difference between success and failure, such as unstable markets and unpredictable weather. Texas Gulf Bank recognizes this and, despite that unpredictability, has been willing to lend the capital we've needed to purchase new equipment, maintain and update our existing equipment, and purchase additional land. Other banks are hesitant to do that for their customers. Without that kind of support from Texas Gulf Bank, our family business couldn't have grown to where it is today."
Expanding their farm has also meant expanding the crops they produce. Mowery Farms currently grows rice, corn, grain sorghum, and soybeans. Over the last 10 years, the cost of farm production has risen as much as 20% in some years. Fortunately, Curt and his family have established a line of credit with Texas Gulf Bank that helps their company finance the purchase of critical production items such as seed and fertilizer.
"The commercial lending department is tops. They are qualified to help us achieve our business goals and desired growth by providing the funding we need to run our day-to-day operations. They care about our business and have a genuine interest in seeing us succeed. And they offer competitive rates that help us keep costs in line with our budget."
The fact that Texas Gulf Bank is locally owned and operated also means a lot to Curt and his family. "Being local allows them to make financing decisions quickly. We don't have to wait a long time for answers, which is extremely important to us -- we need that ability to react quickly."
In addition to business lending services, Mowery Farms also uses Texas Gulf Bank's cash management services. Curt and his family have found the online access to accounts to be very helpful for managing cash flow. "Belinda Clarke in the financial services department recommended this service, and it has proven to be an easy and effective way to monitor checks that have cleared and track our credit line on a regular basis. With this type of information readily available, we are able to make more strategic purchasing decisions."
According to Curt, it's a combination of all of those services that sets Texas Gulf Bank apart from other banks. "It's why we started with Texas Gulf Bank 27 years ago, and why we have stayed with them ever since."
